About National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in 1969 as an integral part of the academic programs, and has since become a cornerstone of university education. The NSS aims to blend education with community service, engaging students in activities that foster both personal and social development.

At GES Sir Dr. M. S. Gosavi COPER, the NSS unit has been active since the college’s inception, initially with 50 volunteers sanctioned by the SPPU NSS Department. The program includes both regular and special camp activities, playing a crucial role in the holistic development of students.

NSS volunteers participate in various social initiatives, including winter camps in rural areas and other activities organized by the college or university departments. These efforts are designed to enhance students’ interactive and behavioral skills, while also contributing to community development. Volunteers work towards creating a technocratic environment and assisting underprivileged communities, fostering personal growth and societal advancement.

Through these experiences, NSS encourages students to develop a sense of patriotism, national integration, brotherhood, and communal harmony. The ultimate goal of the scheme is to nurture a well-rounded character in students, preparing them to contribute positively to society.

NSS Activites:
  • Regular Activities: NSS volunteers generally work with villages and social agencies to complete 120 hours of regular activities during an academic year. As per the Guidelines of National Service Scheme, a volunteer is expected to remain in constant touch with the community for social service. Hence, it is of vital importance that a particular village/slum is selected for implementation of NSS programmes. The activities like tree plantation, Organ donation awareness rally, road safety awareness activity, cleanliness campaign, Toilet Day celebration, Indian Constitution Day etc
  • NSS Special Camp Institute conducts 7 days special camp in the month of December every year. It is mandatory to adopt one village and through the special camp, various activities are organised for the benefit of villagers. The activities conducted in the special camp are Swachata Abhiyan, Tree plantation, Activities on Gender Equality, Village Survey, and Anti Superstitions activity.
